Portable Patio Heaters

Self contained patio heaters range from table top patio heaters to free-standing patio heaters over six feet tall. In most cases, they carry their own fuel systems and are one complete unit. There are some rare portable patio heaters that connect to home propane tanks via a flexible hose.

However, most often they feature a tank housing at the base for a propane patio heater or natural gas patio heater fuel cylinder. The fuel tank is normally an extra purchase. These tanks range in size from 20 to 30 pounds and can usually provide enough fuel at the highest heat output for 12 to 15 hours. Small table top patio heaters usually use a small fuel supply that is sized like a typical aerosol can, which can be bought at most hardware and garden outlets.

Portable patio heaters have their spark igniter and control knob right below the emitter head. The ignition system on a patio heater can vary from brand to brand. Some use a Direct Spark Ignition which creates a succession of sparks each time the button is pushed. This system uses a battery to create the spark to light the pilot light. Others use what is called a piezo lighting system. Piezo systems create a spark by an electromagnetic coil or by a quartz crystal. There is a remarkably small amount of wear on the elements of Piezo systems, and there is no power source to use up and replace.
