Using patio heaters at your next outdoor gathering is sure to make everyone more comfortable and cozy. They are an excellent appliance for enjoying your patio or yard for longer periods during the year. But, since they are burning propane to create heat, it is paramount to know some important safety rules about their operation.
First, make sure there is enough clearance of combustibles around and under the emitter head of your propane patio heaters. For larger units with higher heat output, at least three feet clearance is a good start. Combustibles are wood, pressed paper, plant fibers, plastics, Plexi-glass, butane lighters, or any other solid or liquid that can ignite. Combustible materials and flammable vapors are quite dangerous around outdoor patio heaters and need to be far away.
Always keep children and adults aware of the heat output and the high surface temperatures of the unit. Children should be under constant supervision around table top patio heaters.
Do not hang anything including clothes, towels, or any other flammable material on or near the unit. Do not operate the outdoor heater unless it is placed on a level surface. The gas patio heater must be fully assembled and the heat reflector must be securely in place above the emitter head before use.

Make sure the propane patio heater is fully ventilated for proper airflow. Ensure nothing is obstructing air holes or vents for proper combustion by periodically checking for blockage. Debris or spider webs can clog up these air ducts and reduce performance.
All fittings and hoses should be checked periodically. Gas leaks can be quite dangerous and need special attention. Always service the patio heater at least annually, especially after a long period of storage. Installation, service, and repairs should always be done by a qualified professional.
