Gas-Fired Patio Heater Piping

Follow these basic guides for installing a permanent or semi-permanent gas patio heater to a gas line. The information below is intended as a quick familiarization of what is required to pipe a permanently installed patio heater. Consult your owner manual for full and complete installation details.

A minimum pipe size of ᄑ in. is required for inlet piping. Within 6 feet of the unit, a ᄑ in. lever handled shut-off gas cock should be installed for safe servicing. Check with you local and state plumbing and heating codes for correct sizing of gas lines.

All gas pipe connections to the outdoor heaters must be sealed with a compound that is resistant to liquified petroleum gases. Installing a stub-end drip leg at a low point in the gas supply line to the heater is normally required. It minimizes the chance of dirt or loose material in the line from entering the heater control system of emitter head.

When checking for gas leaks, never use an open flame. Apply a soap and water solution over all lines and fittings to look for bubbles indicating gas leakage. Gas supply pressures must not exceed ᄑ PSI to prevent leakage and control damage.

Installing a 1/8 in. NPT plugged tapping, which is to be accessible for connecting a test gauge, is required upstream of the gas supply connection to the patio heater.
